FAQs

To serve you better, we have assembled a list of our customers' most frequently asked questions. If you don't find your answer here, feel free to contact us.

What do I do if I am experiencing low pressure?

Check your meter, PRV, shut off valve, and the surrounding area for possible leaks. Check the rest of your house as well, including appliances and toilets. If you cannot find any leaks, check with your neighbors to see if they are experiencing the same problem. Next, call/text or email District Management at (720) 722-3692 or smgwsd.operation@gmail.com to report the problem.

Why is my water discolored?

If the water is white/cloudy/milky, a repair could have been completed recently allowing air to enter the line. Allow the water to settle and this should dissipate.

If the water is another color, check your water meter, PRV, and shut off valve, water heater, and other appliances for corrosion. If you don't see any, check with your neighbors to see if they are experiencing the same issue. Next, call/text or email District Management at (720) 722-3692 or smgwsd.operations@gmail.com to report the problem.

What chemicals does our utility district add to the water?

Only chemicals that are approved by the National Safety Foundation for treatment of drinking water.

My water tastes, looks, and smells funny. Is it safe to drink?

All public water systems are required to maintain a minimum chlorine level of 0.2 mg/L (tested at the end of each line) by state law. Systems that use chloramine as a disinfectant must maintain a level of 0.5 mg/L by state law. Our disinfectant levels are tested daily to ensure safety. If there was any concern with the safety of the water, a notice would go out immediately warning residents of the issue and how to treat it (i.e. "Boil Notice").

Why does debris come out of the faucet when running hot water?

Most likely your water heater needs to be flushed. CAUTION: Most manufacturers recommend hiring a professional to flush your water heater. If you plan to do this yourself, read the owner's manual to keep from being hurt and or damaging the water heater.

There is also a slight chance that during routine maintenance, small amounts of sediment entered the system. This water is still safe to drink. Simply flush your fixtures until no more debris comes through.

How much does it cost to connect water and sewer?

Tap Permit

The Tap Permit is something that every home needs to apply for and is a mandatory cost. You will not be able to acquire a Building Permit from the County without your Tap Permit.

FeesCost
Permit Fee$50
Tap Fee$1,500
Facility Improvement Fee$16,500
Total$18,050

Service Line Installation

The District offers service line installations for $12,500. This is NOT a required cost. Property owners can choose to use another contractor to install their service lines. If you choose the latter, please contact District Management at (720) 722-3692 or smgwsd.operations@gmail.com to let us know when you will be installing your service lines, so that we can inspect them before final burial.

Main Line Extension

This only applies to properties that would like to develop but do not have water and sewer mains in front of them. Property owners can extend the main lines at their own cost. Prices are extremely variable depending on the contractor, and we have seen prices from $200-500+ per linear foot for the installation of one main line (water OR sewer). If both main lines need to be extended (water AND sewer) that price can nearly double. There is a deal property owners can make with the District, allowing them reimbursement for any lots that are developed along the extended line. Please contact District Management at (720) 722-3692 or smgwsd.operations@gmail.com for more details.

What are AOS fees and who has to pay them?

AOS - Availability of Service

AOS fees are assessed for properties/lots that resides within one hundred feet (100 ft) of a water line within the community. By State Statute, the District is authorized to assess an Availability Fee. The fees can be increased up to 50% of the monthly user rates. The monies collected can only be used to pay down District debt in support of major capital improvements. Currently the AOS fee for St. Mary's Glacier Water & Sanitation District is $200 annually.
